For
Camping Kickoff Weekend
Posted 27 January
2010
Ice storms, weeklong
below zero cold snaps and an endless supply of snow storms can make it
difficult to relate to camping this time of year. But it is that time
again, time to dream of warmer weather, dust off the camping gear and
plan for the upcoming season. Campers may begin reserving sites for
Camping Kickoff Weekend on January 30.
For the past four years, the first weekend of May has been the kickoff
to camping season in Iowa State Parks.
"Camping Kickoff Weekend is a fun way to draw campers to our
campgrounds a little earlier than they probably would on their own,"
said Kevin Szcodronski, chief of the DNR's State Parks Bureau. "We will
still have the kickoff weekend, but unlike years past, will not be
handing out camping coupons and other goodies because of reduced budget
and staff shortages."
The DNR selects the first weekend in May because campsites are
plentiful and nearby lakes will likely offer good fishing. "There has
been a good response each year even though the weather can be iffy. I
think we are due to have good weather this year just to make up for the
winter we are having," Szcodronski said.
Camping numbers in state parks increased by nearly 38,000 in 2009, and
Szcodronski expects that trend to continue.
"As long as the economy is in this slow recovery, we expect to see an
increase in park use and in camper nights because we offer an
affordable, nearby get-away," he said. "Plus between the park scenery
and our trails, we can offer some mental relaxation and physical
exercise which reduce stress and offer good health benefits."
The campsite reservation system allows users to view the campsite and
what is available: electricity, fire ring, and a physical description
of the site. Click on the online campground reservation button on the
front page of www.iowadnr.gov or
go directly to www.reserveiaparks.com.
While camping kickoff weekend originates in state parks, the DNR
reminds campers that there are many beautiful county park campgrounds
and lakes.
"We are more interested to see people enjoy the outdoors than
specifically where they go to do so," he said. "Even if you don't want
to camp for the night, make a day visit to any park to hike, bike,
picnic, fish or generally relax." |
