NICC Holding GED Graduation Ceremonies June 3-4
Posted 29 May 2009
Approximately 130 students from throughout NICC’s district area will receive their General Educational Development (GED) degrees in June. NICC’s Dubuque-area GED commencement ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 3, at the Town Clock Center for Professional Development. The college’s Calmar area ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 4, in the Wilder Resource Center Auditorium. Forty-six GED students from the greater Dubuque area will graduate and 80 students from the greater Calmar area will earn their GED credentials.

Speakers include Dr. Penny Wills, NICC president, and Mike Van
Milligen, Dubuque city manager. Additional Dubuque ceremony
speakers include Rick Sexton and Shaunah Conley. The Calmar
ceremony offers opportunities for any graduates to share their
stories with the audience.

The NICC Town Clock Center for Professional Development is
located at 680 Main Street in Dubuque. The Wilder building is
located on Hwy. 150 in Calmar.

The first GED tests were developed in 1942 to help returning World
War II veterans finish their studies and re-enter civilian life. Then,
as now, GED tests offer adults who did not finish high school the
opportunity to demonstrate that they have gained the skills and
knowledge of high school graduates. Recognized throughout North
America, the GED program has served as a bridge to education
and employment for an estimated 500,000 men and women
annually and 18 million people over its 66-year history (2007 GED
Statistical Report, American Council on Education).

The Iowa Department of Education states that in 2007, 3,722
Iowans took and passed the full battery of GED exams at a 99
percent pass rate. This pass rate for Iowa is impressive and
regularly provides the state a national spotlight. However, in 2007,
Iowa had a total of 289,280 adults without high school diplomas and only 5,838 of those students tested. NICC is dedicated to helping the state educate the numbers of adults still in need of their GED (2008 Iowa Adult Literacy Fact Sheet).

During these economic times, it is especially important that our
workforce be educated. Studies indicate that for every year of
additional education an individual achieves, his or her workplace
productivity increases by 8.6 percent. Most employers in the U.S.
consider GED graduates the same as traditional high school
graduates and, in fact, GED graduates have comparable weekly
wages with high school graduates.

At a more personal level, NICC’s GED graduates are role models
because their investment in their own life-long learning will
positively impact the literacy levels and educational achievements
of their children and future family generations. Therefore, each
GED graduate’s investment in their educational achievement
impacts them, their family, and the local and national economy.

NICC’s graduates are a diverse group. Some have recently left
school. Others have been out of school for several years. A few
have waited much of their adult lives to achieve this milestone.
NICC congratulates the spring 2009 graduates in joining the
nation’s millions of individuals in achieving their GED certification.
In honor of this accomplishment, NICC provides each GED
graduate with a certificate to take their first three college credits for
free and trusts this will assist each graduate in their quest for
further education, career advancement and self-fulfillment.
